Thoughts on the New Year

In all his future publications
the writer would many times
refer back to this time and describe
the year 2013 as his epiphany

One single continuous epiphany
all be it for occasional lapses
and but for several interruptions

A continuous flow of inspiration
and dutiful inscription sustained
from January to December

Throughout all twelve months
of that extraordinary year

-

I say ok to education
But which kind of education ?

And I say ok to democracy
But which kind of democracy ?

And to death also I say ok
if that is what must be

But which kind of death will it be ?
We'll have to wait and see

-

Loyalty to royalty
lies heavy on the heart

Long live the King

The King must die

The King is dead

We start to sing His praise
expecting Him to come

The King of Kings is ours

Close Your Eyes

Close your eyes
and open them again

Then try to look around
and see every time you blink

As once again returning
from the vision of the Dharmadatu

Arising in the Form of the Deity

Who presides as witness
to enjoyment of the senses

Of Wisdom and Bliss and endless
realisation of Truth in the Pure Land

-

Taste the words

In the movement
of your mouth and lungs

Muscles shaping syllables and vowels
as the breath departs your body

Imparting blessings to all beings
in all directions and all times

Reassuring them
that through their suffering

At last Peace can be found

-

Reassuring them of this
that through their pain and suffering

At last Peace can be found

Honour and Obey

I write these lines before the dawn
beneath the shadow of the moon

I write these lines to please myself
and keep the company of angels

But there's a voice inside my head
which tells me to obey

If you'll do anything I say
how could you throw my books away ?

Now learn this well and keep it safe
within your memory

And teach the children how to read
their lessons in philosophy

For wisdom found by memorising
lines of ancient poetry

And guidance that you find
in poems of prophetic scripture

Remember angels who forget
shed tears and fearing for the future

Too late to make amends
they feel regret for their demonic nature

O ye women of so little faith
so stubborn hard to tame

Give praises due to God and pray
in the Good Lord's name

How dare you throw away like this
my school books and my stories ?

Beyond a Mother's duty true
you know you have no right

O ye women of so little faith
so stubborn hard to tame

Give praises due to God
and pray together in His name

I write these lines to pass the time
and also to remember

On the morning of the last day
in the dark month of December

Granny and the Egg

-1-

Don't try telling Granny
how to suck an egg

All these years she's managed
and she does it very well

She makes a little hole
and then she gives a little pull

Sucking in her cheeks so well
until her mouth is full

She's puffing out her cheeks
and now she's sucking with a will

She'll press her lips around it
till it's just an empty shell

-2-

Don't try telling Granny
how to suck an egg

She'd much prefer it if you learned
to show respect instead

So wait your turn and listen
when she says what must be said

You're far too young to understand
so knock it on the head

Can you appreciate it
when she shows a bit of leg ?

(Or is your) brain soft and runny
like the yolk in Granny's egg ?

-CHORUS-

'Cos Granny likes an egg
when she has a cup of tea

So mind you say your Ps and Qs
and thank you if you please

Yes mind you say excuse me
thank you very much indeed

And now she'll wash that egg
down with a lovely cup of tea

-3-

No don't try telling Granny
'cos she's really very sweet

She'll chew it with her gums
and then she'll stamp her little feet

She'll push and wiggle with her tongue
and rattle her false teeth

She'll make the children giggle
till they bounce right off their seat

She'll hold it tight between her knees
and give that egg a squeeze

So mind you say excuse me
thank you very much indeed

-CHORUS-

(Now we) really mean this most sincerely
if you're thinking she's a tease

Why don't you ask just try asking her
to show you if you please ?

(Yes you) only have to ask her nicely
Please say please and thank you

(Say) please and thank you and excuse me
Thank you very much indeed

-REFRAIN-

Raw or boiled or poached eggs
with salt and pepper too

Fried or scrambled
on some toast

Would you like one or two ?

-

Raw boiled poached
fried scrambled over-easy ... (x3)

-

If you can't see the funny side
she'll take it on the sunny side

Up and down see Granny go ...
she's sucking on an egg

-

Wham bam
Thank you Ma'am

Can she do it ?
Yes she can

She knows how to do it and ...

She'll tell you how you do it
if you want to suck an egg

-CHORUS-

She's tried it with an egg cup
and she's tried it with a spoon

She tried it in the sunlight
and beneath the big fat moon

She tried it in the morning
also in the afternoon

And in the evening when she's done
she falls down in a swoon

-4-

You'll discover soon enough
it's time to end this tune

So don't try telling Granny
'cos she'll tell you what to do

No don't try telling Granny
how to suck an egg

She'll tell you all what for
and then she'll send you off to bed

No don't try telling Granny
how to suck an egg

(She'll be) sucking eggs all day
that's true until the day she's dead

In Praise of My Wife

All praise to Lin Fang

Our Empress
and Hero of the World

Ten thousand no
One hundred thousand

Comely maidens
with pert and gorgeous
breasts displayed

And fine pink nipples
all up standing

Sway from side to side
and lift their slender arms

And dance in unison
and sing her praises

They sing out loud with
melodious and charming chorus

As She rides past
the crowds adoring Her

She's mounted on
a noble white elephant

Resplendent with ornament
of precious jewels and golden glow
upon Her Throne of Royal Stone

Taken from the Holy Mountain
in the West with the blessing of the best

With pomp and pride

And celebrated guests
admiring Her achievements

My Faithful Dog

My faithful dog is happy
'cos he knows when we get home

I'll make his bed and after tea
give him a juicy bone

-

When you go walking with your dog
you'll never be alone

But when you lose him
you can't call him
on your mobile phone

He's out there somewhere

When he barks
somehow you always know

That he'll come home
'cos he would never
leave you on your own

-

He's chasing rabbits in the wood
See round and round he goes

He's chasing rabbits in the wood
He'll chase them high and low

Up the hill and down the hole
and under rocks and stones

He's chasing rabbits in the wood
and everybody knows

Dogs like chasing rabbits
'cos it keeps them on their toes

-

He's chasing rabbits in the wood
He's rolling in the snow

Now you see him
Now you don't

And so the saying goes

When you get home
he'll wag his tail

And kiss you on the nose

-

He'll smile and wag his tail
'cos that's his way to say hello

He does that 'cos he loves you
and he's happy to be home

And after tea he'll go to bed
and chew his favourite bone

-

My faithful dog is happy
'cos he knows when we get home

I'll make his bed and after tea
give him a juicy bone

Farewell to the Dame

I'm going to miss the wild applause
and large sums of money

Do you know when I appear before you
on that stage my gynaecologist
is still washing his hands ?

Isn't that a wonderful thought !

Now let me tell you dear listeners
John Humphrys is an adorable man
and he's looking at my frock

Is he thinking who
would look nice in that ?

Well let me tell you
she couldn't afford it

Oh yes I do like to invest in my clothes

My son designed this frock
Isn't it marvellous ?

Do you know he was born
exactly nine months after I saw
Frank Sinatra perform in a concert

And the gutter press are still
trying make something out of that

Just Like Me

Jesus was a Buddha
and Buddha is the Christ

I love both together
'cos both are very nice

Together I love both of them
because they're very nice

Yes I'm a Christian and a Buddhist
'cos both are very nice

-

Mohammed was a teacher
and so was Jesus Christ
a messenger from Allah
who lives in Paradise

Yes Buddha was a teacher
and so was Jesus Christ
a messenger from Allah
who lives in Paradise

-

I'm a Muslim Christian Buddhist
and I love the Trinity

If you love everybody
O then you're just like me

'Cos I love everybody
because they're just like me

If you love everybody
You're just like me

-

We don't want to suffer
and we want to be happy

If you love everybody
O then you're just like me

We want to be happy
and we want to be free

Yeah that's why
everybody is just like me

-

Just like me
Yeah just like me

That's why
everybody is just like me

In the Garden

We are here in the garden

If we stray we still return
forgiving sins and giving pardon
training patience in the mind

We're here to learn to love each other
to be gentle and be kind

Call me mad or call me bonkers

Love and patience conquers all

Out of murky swamp grow slender
shoots of lovely lotus plants and buds
of hope soon come appearing

Petals open in the sunlight
and delight the eyes of all

Everyone who comes to see them
knows that in their hearts believing
love will hear their call

Love comes fast
or love comes slowly
and protects us when we fall

But at last we hear the answer
Love will conquer all

Angel of Love

In another atmosphere of love
the contract once we made has
sadly now been broken

Dearest love you must depart
You can not hold me to that pact
You must dear heart bid me adieu

And should we meet by chance in passing
when we have been so long estranged
you'll say like pulse of wings excited
never have you beat retreat so fast
or seen the likes of me before

You fell headlong through the clouds
and heard the slamming of the door

Behind it there you still recite
vain hopes of one day reuniting
lovers who were two in one

One love the victim and the other lover
perpetrator of the vicious crime

Remember Birkenhead

Why should I be ashamed
of what I do
simply because
I must ?

Because the darkness
will engulf you

And the light
will fade too soon

We left our station
when the order
was to stand

To let the women
and the children go

Before the calling of the man

Into the boats to row to shore
to live a better life than ours

Because we gave way to conceit

Discarding that which Thou hast made

And held ourselves in the belief
that we would be forgiven

What was that thought
I had in mind ?

I don't know

Can't remember

Show me good evidence
of truth and tell me now

Who can forecast the weather ?

What we did
was not our best

But not a trace was left

Why should I be ashamed
of what I do ?

Why you say
I'll tell you why

Simply because you must

Satan's Song

To try to make you listen

I won't burn out my soul

to keep you warm beside the fire

when winter nights grow cold

For the privilege of playing for you

when you're wise and old

you'll know the young and foolish

have to do what they're told

Oh yes I'll make the effort

but I won't pay the toll

To cross the River Styx

you'll have to cross his palm with gold

'Cos Satan is the boatman

who rows the boat to Hell

and you'll hear the dead souls screaming

when they ring the Mission Bell

So when you buy your ticket

and when you hear the tale

Don't listen to the wicked

tell you everything's for sale

To try to make you listen

I won't burn out my soul

This song is just a vision

of the story of the world

Madiba

I found peace at the close of day

In his own words this is what he said

Together we walked side by side

on the long road to freedom

We shared the joy of living

and together we savoured

the sweet taste of freedom

The last time I saw him alive

he had become an old man

weak and helpless

reduced to a shadow

of his former self

and now

the inevitable

has happened

I don't consider that he was my friend

He was my elder brother

Dear Madiba you had

abundant reserves of love and tolerance

such a firm belief in justice and equality

that could not be shaken

and continually you served

as a source of enormous strength

for many people around the world

But now I have lost you

my life is a void

I don't know who to turn to

in the solstice of my life

Winter solstice comes early

on the twenty first

Well we're not quite

there yet then are we ?

Every day is getting shorter

Golden days of winter light

Silver clouds in golden light

giving hope for years to come

beneath the setting of the sun

On Washington They're Marching

On Washington they're marching

with Martin Luther King

and Bobby Dylan's singing

It's 1963

They dreamed a dream

It's happening

The Black Man can be free

They dreamed a dream

It's happening

The Black Man can be free

Who was the assassin ?

Who killed the Kennedys ?

Who's fighting for the rights

of people bound in slavery ?

They dreamed a dream

It's happening

The Black Man can be free

Malcolm X in Mecca

The nation was a fetter

He sees black and white

together pray in technicolour

Haile Selassie

Rastas smoking sensi

From Marcus Garvey to Bob Marley

and Peter Tosh - he's dangerous

The Black Man can be free

Is getting high the only way

the Black Man can be free ?

Ask Gil Scott-Heron

is the revolution here ?

And if it was

then would he care

when Whitey's on the Moon

but the Black Man's still not free ?

And now we see Barack Obama

driving in a Hummer

Nelson Mandela

South Africa rebeller

The ANC will tell ya

He's a jolly good fella

Steven Biko died for this

One day we'll live in peace

They dreamed a dream

It's happening

The Black Man can be free

On Washington they're marching

with Martin Luther King

and Bobby Dylan's singing

It's 1963

They dreamed a dream

It's happening

The Black Man can be free

When White Men Came

When white men came onto our land

they burnt down our homes

We had to run for our lives

to escape from the slave traders

They shoot us with their guns

'cos they despise us and they hate us

and they want to use us

as cheap labour

for their business

When they've caught us

they transport us

in ships and then they sell us

in the market at the station

to work on a plantation ...

They rape our women

and they lynch us

and then they

try to teach us

bible stories

it's outrageous ...

to say that

God was on their side

Love the Music - Hate Racism

The slave trade was the
basis of the world economy
to keep the lifestyle of the rich
supplied with luxury

Fortunes could be made
trading in commodities
cotton tobacco sugar
coffee and tea

Clarkson and Wilberforce campaigned
to have it banned - they said the black
man was the white man's burden
Can you understand ?

The USA's a country
where the biggest is the best
You'll find the KKK logo
on a pack of cigarettes

The white supremacists wear
pointed hats and join the dance
Griffiths made a film about them
called "Intolerance"

In the UK today
there's prejudice and bigotry
racial discrimination
and inequality

Police use stop and search
to victimise minorities
That's how they start the
Brixton riots in the 1980s

So ask Mrs. Lawrence
how long she had to wait
to have her day in court
It came nineteen years too late

Read "How to Kill a Mocking Bird"
Yes justice must be done
Tell me how did O. J. Simpson
get away with murder number one ?

'Cos if he's rich and famous
then a black man can be free
But the poor are still exploited
Look around you and you'll see

Give Peace a Chance

-1-

Hello everybody !
Thank you very much for coming !
We've got a song to sing for you
with music and some drumming

I can see one or two faces
in the crowd I recognise
It's good to see you here today !
It's a nice surprise !

-

Now we've got a lot to do
We've got to tell everyone
We can't win when we are fighting
a war that can't be won

So thank you for coming
and supporting our cause
Let's get down to business
to stop the war !

-

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

-2-

Is this cruelty and violence
what we're fighting for
producing and consuming
the instruments of war ?

Why can't we just try making
our lives a little better ?
Why do we have to fight ?
Why can't we just agree to differ ?

-

To provide the goods and services
that people really need ?
There are so many of us
many mouths we have to feed

This life is full of struggle
Yes this life is very hard
It seems the most aggressive player
always holds the winning card

-

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

-3-

The problem that we have
when we campaign for peace is this
We don't know how to explain
how could a peaceful world exist

If we looked into our hearts
perhaps then we could learn
Peace can only be established
on someone else's terms

-

All this talk about security
You know I think it's bogus
We're scared of death and they use that
to bully and control us

Your language and education
is conditioning your thought
if you can't think for yourself
and question what you're taught

-

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

-4-

My gift is an affliction
a disorder in my brain
Ideas go round in my head
and drive me half insane

A genetic disposition
to make too much dopamine
flow in the composition
of a chemical machine

-

The doctor gives me medicine
which I take from time to time
when this mental agitation
has no rhythm and no rhyme

Then I try to get some rest
and so I go to bed
One day I pray I'll rest in peace
forever when I'm dead

-

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

All we are saying
is give peace a chance

Requiem for the Masses

Admiring from a distance
achievements of the great and good
unending daily service
of steady dull
obligatory labour

Unaware of the rising stench
of rotting corpses
waiting for burial or cremation
creatures born of ignorance
prejudice and bigotry
and violence
injustice against women
pornography
murder and rape

What's wrong with me ?

How can I be so callous
indifferent to their suffering and pain ?

By turns my heart is filled with poison
one kind after another

Jealousy and envy

Hatred and distaste

Who would be my teacher ?
Who would be their friend ?

Who will press tender lips
onto the furrowed brow
of the dying and the maimed
and turn their head
to hear at last
the dying words
of starving children ?

What can they say ?

How can you justify
the ways of God to man ?

We want to be free
to do what we want to do

Restore your forgiveness
and mercy unto me

We want to be free
to cry out fire
in a crowded theatre

What do you want ?
What do you want from me ?

Surely freedom
is doing what you have to do
without a heavy heart

You will be judged
and weighed in the balance

Save their souls

Free them forever
from this tyranny

I am beginning to forget their faces

To the dreamers
self deceivers

Be careful what you dream
Sometimes your dreams come true

You've made your bed
so lie in it

There's nothing else to do

Put out the light
Curl up tight

Put all your cares behind you
No one's gonna ask you now
How can you sleep at night ?

When reason sleeps
monsters keep
an evil eye on dreamers
to catch their dreams
and make their meaning
clear to non believers

To the poets and believers

They say
Nothing's new under the sun

We say prayers over the dead

Every sentence in my head
someone else has said

There's nothing you can say
that can't be said in prose

Nothing that you say
can't be better said
in prose

Anything
a poem or a lyric or a verse can say
can always be rewritten
and said much better
in plain English

Better in the sense
of being clearer
in its meaning
and intent

But also we know
that something's lost
in the translation

Only when words have rhyme and rhythm
can they be mnemonic
wonderful evocative bewitching

Confusing or concise
carry a tune
and make a
thought or feeling
easy to remember

When we are never seen again

When we have gone away

Will we be loved ?
Will we be missed ?

Will you perhaps remember us
for what we did ?

But forget the reason why ?

Then let a poet speak
and let him sing

Let him have the final say

The last words of the eternal optimist
Remember them

This isn't how I die

Don't let your dreams belong to anyone
Don't let your dreams come true

Keep believing in the possibility
of things yet to come

You can't change the world
but the world is ever changing

Don't ask science
to explain the meaning
of everything to you

If it does
you know it lies
and lies are better than the truth

And that's a lie

The truth is very simple

I know I am alive
and life must go on

I know they are dead but I'm alive
and life must go on

Appearance is deceptive
and beauty is a lie

The truth is an ugly truth
you don't need to know

That is all you need to know

All you need to know

That's all you know
and all you need to know

That is all you need to know

O coiner of phrases
Will you ever be forgiven ?

Can you speak truth to power
and justify the ways of God to man ?

See the Fair Lady

See the fair Lady of the Lake
How patiently she waits
until that moment
when suddenly she lifts her hand
and without a sound
takes hold of the sword
flying through the misty air
over the surface of the water

Who was it ?
Who has thrown the sword
through the mist into the lake ?

It is you !
Yes here you are !
We see you standing by the shore
an expression on your face
of awe and wonder
In your eyes are tears
for the friends that you have lost
and the times you spent together
which will never come again

Guinevere and Lancelot
and the noble knights of the round table
and the battles that you fought
in the mountains and on the plains
to secure your kingdom
How could we let you forget them ?
And of course the questing for the Grail

But who are we
who observe your lonely figure
looking out over the lake ?

The sword blade pointing upwards
slowly descends into the depths
Unseen cold in darkness
there it lays
Let it lie there now and forever
with the Lady of the Lake

We are the children of your nation
the true descendants of your race
who were told of you in stories
a legend to admire
inspiring us to answer
the question of the ages
and giving us the power
to bring you back to life once more
in our imagination
and to hold you here
and hail you as our King
Arthur
prophet of poetic vision
master builder of the myth of Britain

Return to your castle
Camelot is safe
Your work is done

-

Yes you who knew
how to forge the metal from the stone
You knew it well before the hour
and still have not forgot
the riddle of the autumn flower
the key that fits the lock
that you might one day
ride out from your tower
to meet the Lady of the Lake

Everywhere you looked for her
In every place you sought
to find her waiting there
You dared to dream of her at night
that when the bloody battle
for your kingdom has been fought
when friend and foe alike
have fallen slaughtered in the fight
then you alone would be left standing
with both hands holding the sword
Excaliber
made magically
from metal made from stone
with knowledge passed down to you
by men of wisdom and tradition

You would lift up that sword
and with a roar proclaim your victory
and promise to restore Excaliber to her
where it should rightfully belong
Your strength was only lent to you
for faithful service to the strong

Her power and dominion
over science in war and peace
her tranquility and her reason
is the subject of our song

Like fruit out of season
this ancient story we relate
tastes sweet to men devoted
to the Lady of the Lake

Her patience is eternal
In our dreams she never sleeps
She loves us from a distance
forever out of reach
She is not real but still we feel
we owe her thanks in deed
The blessing of the Fairy Queen
will give us everything we need

For when we have both laughed
and cried in equal measure
satisfied our hearts' desire
with pleasure and with pain
at last we find
our time is spent
looking for an ending
in songs of joy and sad lament

The Leaves of Light (traditional)

All under the leaves and the leaves of light
I met with Virgins Seven
And one of them was Mary Mild
Our Lord's first Mother in Heaven

Oh where are you going you seven pretty maids
All under the leaves of light ?
Oh we are going, Thomas they said
Seeking for a friend of thine

And they went down into yonder town
And sat in the Gallery
And there they saw sweet Jesus Christ
Hanging from a Tree

Oh do not weep for me my Mother
Oh do not for me grieve
For I must suffer this, he said
For Adam and for Eve

Oh how can I my weeping cease
My sorrows to forgo
When I must see my own Son die
And sons I have no more ?

He laid his head on his right shoulder
Death soon drew him nigh
May the Holy Ghost receive my soul
Dear Mother now I die

And oh the rose, the gentle rose
The fennel it grows so strong
Amen, dear Lord, to thy Charity
Is the ending of my song

The Busker

-1-

There's a man with a guitar
singing songs on the pavement

And he wants to be famous
for a night and a day

-

In his arms he holds the charm
of words that came between us

And he whispers in your ear
the words that you can't say

-2-

If I was you I'd walk away
Don't walk on the wild side !

'Cos you've seen his face before
He lives outside the law

-

He smells of fish and chips
and his breath's like
the kiss of death

How many roads
must a man walk down ?

-3-

When the road that leads to Hell
is paved with good intentions

Now he's about to play
knocking on Heaven's door

-

These boots were made for walking
and that's just what they'll do

One of these days these boots
are gonna walk all over you

-4-

Let me take you by the hand
I'll lead you through the
streets of London

I'll show you something
that'll make you change your mind

-

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

(We'll sing ...)
London Bridge is falling down

-5-

(We'll sing ...)
London Bridge is falling down

(We'll sing ...)
London Bridge is falling down

-

Yesterday all my troubles
seemed so far away

Tomorrow tomorrow
I love you tomorrow

-6-

He's the King of the Road
He's one of the Dirty Dozen

'Cos he doesn't have a home
He sleeps in a cardboard box

-

Little boxes little boxes
Little boxes made of ticky tacky

With a can of lager
and a pipe of squidgy black

-7-

Or a bottle of the hard stuff
Or any kind of medicine

Which will feed your addiction
so you don't feel the cold

-

Like Puff the Magic Dragon
who lived by the sea

Pass the Duchy to the left
That means pass it to me

-8-

Can you spare me some change ?
Make it worth my while

Cross my palm with forty
silver coins just for a smile

-

And I'll sing you a song
No I won't tell a lie

I think you know the words by now

Whoopee we're all gonna die !

Summertime

-1-

We left in the morning
It was ever so cold
You lent me a blanket to wear

We headed down south
on the open road
We were going to Glastonbury Fair

Yeah we were going to Glastonbury Fair !

-

Oh, in the summertime
we were feeling so free

Oh, and I'd make you mine
You were my destiny
Is this my memory
or my fantasy ?

-2-

Later that night
as we sat round the fire
You played the guitar and we sang old songs

I passed you a drink
You said you were tired
but we danced till the new day began

Yes we danced till the new day began !

-

Oh, in the summertime
we were feeling so free

Oh, and I'd make you mine
You were my destiny
Is this my memory
or my fantasy ?

-3-

While your friends watched the band
from the back of the tent
we ran off to play with the clowns

From the top of the hill
I could see what you meant
but I couldn't see you come down

No I couldn't see you come down !

-

Oh, in the summertime
we were feeling so free

Oh, and I'd make you mine
You were my destiny
Is this my memory
or my fantasy ?

-

How would it be
if I'd never met you at all ?

Memories sometimes play games with me

You were the love that I never had
I don't even remember your name

I don't even remember your name

-4-

There were hippies and hustlers
and women in drag
chasing the dragons away

Walk round the stone circle
Don't you look back !
Watch how the children play

Yes watch how the children play !

-

Oh, in the summertime
we were feeling so free

Oh, and I'd make you mine
You were my destiny
Is this my memory
or my fantasy ?

-

How would it be
if I'd never met you at all ?

Memories sometimes play games with me

You were the love that I never had
I don't even remember your name

I don't even remember your name
I don't even remember your name

O Happy Summer

Lost gone
Wind blown luck
with twittering of sparrows
O happy summer !

Beautiful peaches
look so fresh
in the market
Soon they go rotten

Ducks on the table
sit and wait
so patiently
What is the future ?

Stone caught in sandal
The path is smooth
but it hurts
Pray for protection

------

I do eat other things you know
besides the fruit of apple trees
that grow in the meadow

------

Teacher's Advice

Realising this
emptiness and bliss

Tell me now then
what have you got to say ?

-

How can I help you ?

And you say ...

I can help you on the path
of accumulation

-

Ok this is what we'll do

But you must make an effort

-

When the mind becomes distracted

by sleep
excitement
or wandering

-

Tighten don't squeeze

-

Free will and power
is conferred on you

by virtue of your understanding
that no one can be free

and nothing is immutable

-

Other people are more
important than me

-

You thought you didn't dream
but you were mistaken

-

Why can't you
remember your dreams ?

When did you forget them ?

Who was dreaming anyway ?

-

If you feel disappointed
it might be just as well

to ask yourself
what did you expect

-

That's nice
just relax here
and take some rest

-

If you're always like this
then everyone will love you

practise daily
don't give up

-

This is a great opportunity

-

You are what you are
not what you take
yourself to be

-

Don't change your name
on new years day

it's up to you
why not ?

-

You are bound to be successful

-

You must see this before you go
it meant a lot to me

-

After a while you will be able
to help others in the same way

or perhaps you think
you won't be able to ?

then take stock
and count your blessings

-

You and everybody else
have the seed planted
deep within

and you have committed
yourself to practise many
many times in the past

and invited your past selves
many times in the future
to join you in this practice

and each time
has left its imprints

so take courage
and go on

-

Strengthen yourself
in preliminary training
by stressing the importance
of holding pure intention

-

Pay particular attention
to holding pure intention

take courage
and go on

Come Unto Me

HUM

out of clear blue sky

luminous divine

in a rainbow of five colours

come unto me

lovely jewelled messengers

in countless numbers

iridescent

also infinitely small

even dull and unseen

I invite you wisdom beings

to arrive

with perfect timing

blessing my three places

each in turn

and simultaneously

to make me pure

and drink from the nectar

in my heart

I am therefore I think

I am therefore I think

I think therefore I am not

------

All things are ...

conditioned impermanent and made of many parts

Where each part is in itself ...

conditioned impermanent and made of many parts

------

So where do I fit in  ... to all of this then ?

And what should I do ?

------

According to a saying
attributed to Laozi (Old Master)

If you are depressed you are living in the past
If you are anxious you are living in the future
If you are at peace you are living in the present

But I say this ...

Be anxious for the past
depressed about the future
and in the present
make eternal war
against the enemy
and strengthen
always in your heart
the will to keep fighting

------

See now what I become

How I have shamed myself

My craven selfishness is now become
an object of blame in this world

The foremost object of blame
and the subject of endless
remorseless regret

No one else
do I take to be
more to blame than myself

For this horrible existence

In which I lurch uncontrollably
from relish to despair

In one vile act after another

Without a moment's thought

For the harmful effect
my actions have on those around me

And the consequences
which will inevitably arise
in my own mental continuum

As a result
of what I do now

Causing me
great suffering
in the three times
past present and future

Wherever I may find myself to be
in all the ten directions

May I never lose sight of this sense
of abject failure and culpability

And may I never more become a slave
to the daughters of Mara appearing
in the aspect of the Rudra

------

What other dreadful
things do you
think you'll
find buried
long ago
which will
one day
come back
to haunt you ?

Can you remember
everything you did once
upon a time and could
you then or can you
even now know
for certain
what the
consequence
will be ?

Who can say ?

Who will be the judge
to make the final statement
and pronounce the verdict
and sentence on
the actions of
your past ?

------

Where shall we place the silver bowls ?

Seven set in line upon the altar
consecrated to your memory

They should be used to catch and collect
the tears of grieving mothers

Hungry ghosts and orphaned children
and offered to the spirits

Who would otherwise be shrieking and
torment us in the night

By rights expecting recompense
demanding payment for the
sins we have committed
and rejoiced in

Harming others and ourselves
every moment an atrocity

Perpetrated willfully
against our better nature

From our birth until our death

And on into the bardo
where peace cannot be found

We alone
must take the blame

And expect one day
to be judged by what we do

Cry to the Gurus

Wonderful
great bodhisattvas
of infinite wisdom
you with
immense muscular
strength whose lungs
can hold a single breath
for endless cycles
of samsaric suffering
and whose every
action exhibits
exquisite skill
and creativity
acquired through
dedicated practice
over many virtuous past lives
yes you who hate to sit
in idleness while those who
cry out to you for guidance
continue to fall into sin
and break their vows ...

Think of me
in this very instant
and bless me
continuously
in every conceivable situation
with your reassuring presence
in my heart
and promise you will
never leave me
and promise always
to be there

Give me your strength
and support
and a sense of purpose
when I feel I can't go on
encourage me
to try again

And let me always
be inspired
by your shining example
by the solemn noble vow
you made to serve
all beings
in all times
till each and every
one of them
comes to know you
as their friend
and attains enlightenment

The Bug Song

I’ve found a bug inside me

It’s programmed to explode

I hear the timer ticking

as I’m walking down the road

This bug is contagious

It’s crawling up your spine

And when it gets inside your head

it tells you that it’s mine

Now bugs are all around you

They’re swarming like flies

For every bug that bites the dust

another bug dies

There’s been an infestation

The bugs have gone to town

They’re chewing up the pavement

and knocking houses down

All they leave behind them

is litter on the streets

And on the mic the pitter patter

of their little feet

In every conversation

bugs are on the line

Recording information

of people place and time

The juice is in the tube

and it’s fluorescent green

There are bugs to make it dirty

and bugs to make it clean

If you think bugs are nasty

then try to treat them nice

Bad bugs will remember you

and follow your advice

Someone may have told you

bugs are really cool

But when you get to know them well

they tell you you’re a fool

To meet the bugs is easy

There’s no right or wrong

Make sure you enjoy yourself

and bugs will play along

In Bugworld there’s no teacher

Bugs don’t have to go to school

When bugs are in the classroom

they break the golden rule

Some bugs are getting older now

Some are still brand new

The good bugs fly away too soon

The rest get stuck on you

Bugs can be your friends

They like to tag along

But the bugs you really hate

are the ones that sing this song

Bugs come in all shapes and sizes

though most of them are small

There are fat ones thin ones short ones

and some bugs are quite tall

Down every pipe and cable

you’ll find bugs are there

They’re hoping that someone else

will tell them that they care

Someone should have warned you

Are you sure you haven’t heard ?

It’s been on the news today

It’s a bug alert

Bugs are in the basement

Bugs are in the hall

Bugs are in the carpet

and climbing up the wall

Bugs are in your trousers

Bugs are in your shirt

Bugs are in the boots you’re wearing

when you go to work

When you step out on the street

the little bugs start running

They’re frightened you might tread on

them if they don’t see you coming

Look left before you cross the road

Ten steps should be enough

If you want to catch a bug

then you can catch the bus

Bugs will take your ticket

Bugs will make you pay

Some bugs are really wicked

and they charge you by the day

Bugs like to have a laugh

They laugh at your expense

You can see them split their sides

sitting on the fence

The baby’s in the buggy

Mum takes it for a walk

You’d see the bugs are in the baby

if only it could talk

In the shops and supermarkets

see the bugs left on the shelf

Buy a bug for someone else

or buy one for yourself

In the off-licence and chemist

they’ve got bugs to sell

Bugs that make you sick

as well as bugs that make you well

Some bugs cause infection

They like to see you sneeze

You get a running nose

when bugs are blowing in the breeze

Like balls the bugs are bouncing

around in my head

There’s one right in the middle

Is it yellow blue or red ?

Bugs like to hang out upside down

That’s true without a doubt

Bugs are inside bugs are outside

Bugs are inside out

Their numbers are increasing

How many can you see ?

If you lose count then start again

Start with 123

Excuse me for asking

Does this bugging ever stop ?

Do bugs go on forever

or until they reach the top ?

The bug stops here that much is clear

You signed your name in ink

The bugs won’t be responsible

It says so in small print

When you want to find the answers

to the questions in your mind

tell us what’s been bugging you

Let’s see what we can find

What’s a bug and where’s a bug ?

What’s a bug to do ?

How and who’s the bug ?

And why’s he doing it to you ?

When you’re losing your temper

and they’ve really made you cross

They’ve been playing silly buggers

and you wish they’d bugger off

If they make you angry

If they make you mad

Remember bugs have feelings

sometimes happy sometimes sad

Look out for the bugs

bugs are free

Here’s a bug for you

and here’s a bug for me

When you tidy up your house

and you’re shaking out the rug

And you see the dog is scratching

Don’t blame it on the bugs

If they hear you cursing them

they’ll wait until you sleep

Then the bugs will take revenge

by tickling your feet

Even when you’re fast asleep

things aren’t as they seem

Bugs find the secret meanings

which are hidden in your dreams

Round and round the candle light

go bugs in crazy flight

The lucky bugs who don’t get burnt

escape into the night

Now it’s time for bed

I hope the bugs don’t bite

If they do then bite them back

Don’t give up the fight

If you try and try again

Then try once more as planned

You’re bound to be successful

Bugs will lend a hand

If at first you don’t succeed

Try looking for the bugs

Bugs sing love is all you need

All you need is love

Bugs are in the music

Bugs are on the beat

So get the bugs out on the floor

and let them move your feet
